Indonesia launches Telkom 3S satellite successfully

Kourou, French Guiana: The Indonesia’s biggest telecommunication company Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) has successfully launched its Telkom 3S satellite from Arianespace’s spaceport in Kourou, French Guiana, at 6.39 p.m. on February 14 local time or Wednesday at 4.39 am Jakarta time.

The US$215 million worth satellite carries 24 C-band, eight extended C-band, and 10 Ku-band transponders, which intends to provide high-definition television services, faster mobile communications and Internet applications across the sprawling archipelago of over than 17,000 islands.

“With Telkom 3S, Telkom will have a total of three satellites. The launching intends to increase the coverage since Telkom 1 and Telkom 2 has the same coverage with Telkom 3S. The reason is that our capacity is not enough; we still rent [transponders] from other countries,” Telkom’s president director Alex J. Sinaga said.

Telkom 3S will first travel to 135.5 degrees east for testing purposes; then it will reach the final orbital position at 118 degrees east. The US$215 billion worth satellite is fitted with 24 C-band, eight extended C-band and 10 Ku-band transponders.

Alex said that it would take ten days from the satellite launched until it could reach 135.5 degrees orbital position for testing purposes. After that, the spacecraft would be moved one degree a day to reach its fixed orbital position at 118 degrees east, he added.

Arianespace has successfully orbited two satellites: Telkom 3s for Telkom Indonesia, together with SKY Brasil-1 for the operator AT&T/ DirectTV.

“Arianespace is delighted to announce that SKY Brasil-1 and Telkom 3s have been separated as planned on the targeted geostationary orbit,” Stéphane Israël is the Chairman and CEO of Arianespace said in the satellite viewing site named Jupiter control room on Tuesday night local time.

Replacing the position of Telkom 2, the Telkom 3S, which has a lifespan of 15 years, will cover Indonesia and a part of neighboring Malaysia.

Apart from Indonesia, other countries, such as Brazil, Mexico and other South American countries, have also launched their satellites from the country. – The Jakarta Post/ANN

Telkom Indonesia 2015 profit climbed 7% to USD1.17bn

Jakarta, dominant fixed and mobile operator PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom Indonesia) has published its financial results for 2015, highlighting a 7% year-on-year increase in net profit to IDR15.489 trillion (USD1.17 billion), from IDR14.471 trillion in full year 2014. Revenue in FY 2015 increased by 14.2% on an annualised basis to IDR102.470 trillion, while operating profit stood at IDR32.418 trillion (+11%) and EBITDA reached IDR51.415 trillion, up 12.6% compared to IDR45.673 trillion in 2014; EBITDA margin was 50.2%, down from 50.9% in 2014.

The company said revenue derived from mobile operations amounted to IDR76.100 trillion last year, while turnover from its data, internet and IT services contributed a further IDR32.680 trillion. Full-year CAPEX was IDR26.4 trillion, largely apportioned to efforts to build out its mobile broadband infrastructure (e.g. LTE), property, data centre, and submarine cable investments on SEA-ME-WE5 and SEA-US. The firm noted that mobile arm Telkomsel continued to strengthen its network quality with almost 18,000 new base transceiver stations (BTS) installed during the year. Around 90% of new BTS were 3G/4G-enabled to enhance the ‘mobile broadband experience,’ it said.

Telkom, which is 52.6%-owned by the government of Indonesia, closed out 31 December 2015 with a total of 152.641 million mobile users for Telkomsel (up 8.6% y-o-y), of which 149.131 million were pre-paid (8.3%). In its report, the parent noted that for the fourth consecutive year Telkomsel achieved triple double-digit growth in revenue, EBITDA and net income, which rose by 14.8%, 14.4% and 15.4% y-o-y respectively. Revenues grew to IDR76.055 trillion, with the growth engine being its Digital Business, which increased sales by 43.5% y-o-y, driven by data which surged by 43.9% y-o-y and digital services which grew by 39.2%. During FY 2015, Telkomsel built out 17,869 new base transceiver station (BTS), a 14.9% increase y-o-y, noting too that within this, its 4G LTE deployment is being carried out on an ‘on-demand’ basis, to take into account ‘4G handset penetration and the level of demand in … cities’. The cellco has deployed a total of 1,761 4G BTS to date, while overall, Telkomsel’s networks totalled 103,289 BTS on air by end-December 2015, up 20.9% on the year before, of which 54,895 BTS were 3G/4G enabled (40.7%). As of 31 December 2015, 2.2 million customers had swapped to a USIM to utilise Telkomsel’s 4G services. In addition, Telkom reported 10.277 million fixed line (POTS) accesses, up from 9.698 million at end-2014, 3.983 million fixed broadband connections (17.2%) and 43.786 million Telkomsel Flash users (40.3%). In 2015, Telkom increased its focus on the development of its bundled service ‘IndiHome Triple Play’, aggressively developing its fibre-to-the-home (FTTH) infrastructure, with a ‘focus on monetisation of our fibre homes-passed,’ it said. As a result, by the start of 2016 a total of around ten million homes were passed by FTTH, while the number of IndiHome subscribers reached 1.1 million with ARPU of IDR310,000 per month.

Space Systems Loral Gets The Nod From Telkom Indonesia To Build TELKOM-4

[Satnews] Space Systems Loral (SSL) has been selected to provide a communications satellite to PT Telkom Indonesia (Persero) Tbk, the largest telecommunication and network provider in Indonesia.

SSL was informed last week that the company is the winner of the procurement of the TELKOM-4 satellite, which will be used for fixed satellite services in Indonesia, India, and Southeast Asia.

The satellite will be based on the highly reliable SSL 1300 platform, which provides the flexibility to support a broad range of applications and technology advances. It is designed to provide service for 15 years or more.

Satellite services are particularly important in regions such as Indonesia where the population is spread over thousands of islands,” said John Celli, president of SSL. “For SSL, this is the third satellite for Indonesia that we will add to our backlog and we are honored to play such an important role in expanding the telecommunications infrastructure for the nation and the region.

Because our country consists of thousands of islands, Indonesia needs satellite technology,” said Alex J Sinaga, president director and chief operating officer of Telkom. “Satellite complements our other technologies, such as submarine cable, as the backbone that connects the islands of Indonesia.

Telkom Aims to Finalise GTA Acquisition in Early 2016

PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia (Telkom) is aiming to complete its acquisition of Guam-based full-service telecoms operator GTA by the end of the first quarter of 2016. The Jakarta Globe cites Honesti Basyir, Telkom’s director for wholesale and international services, as saying that the deal is awaiting approval from the US Federal Communications Commission (FCC). The Indonesian company revealed in June that it had reached a definitive agreement to acquire GTA from funds serviced by Japanese private equity firm Advantage Partners, and the deal was cleared by Guam’s Public Utilities Commission (PUC) in August. ‘We’re currently waiting for approval from the United States, but there’s not clear estimate on that because it’s not within our control. Based on our observation of past deals, the best scenario is that we can close the deal by the first quarter of 2016,’ Honesti Basyir said. Under the terms of the transaction, Telkom USA (established in December 2013 as an international arm of Telkom) will acquire GTA’s parent company TeleGuam Holdings. Telkom is using proceeds from its IDR7 trillion (USD514.5 million) bond sale in July to fund the acquisition.
TeleGeography’s GlobalComms Database states that Advantage Partners acquired GTA from Shamrock Capital Advisors in June 2011. The latter bought GTA from the government in January 2005.

Guam’s PUC approves Telkom’s acquisition of GTA

Guam, August 31 2015. Guam’s regulatory Public Utilities Commission (PUC) on Thursday unanimously approved the sale of GTA to an Indonesia-based telecom giant.

The PUC is a step in the approval process that includes the Federal Communications Commission and security clearance reviews by federal agencies. GTA and PT Telekomunikasi Indonesia, through its subsidiary Telkom USA, Inc announced in January they’ve reached a definitive agreement for the purchase. GTA previously stated it expects its number of workers — about 445 in January — to stay about the same after the acquisition. A national security background check on the buyer can be expected, as was the case when Advantage Partners, which is primarily owned by Japan-based investors, bought GTA. The acquisition will strengthen Telkom’s portfolio of international operations, which include Telin Singapore, Telin Hong Kong, Telkom Australia, Telkom Taiwan, Telkom USA, Telin Malaysia, Telkom Macau, Telin East Timor and a branch in Myanmar, according to the Telkom and GTA press release in January.

Telkom is one of GTA’s partners in the project to connect Indonesia, the Philippines and other parts of Southeast Asia, Guam, Honolulu and the West Coast with a new undersea fiber-optic cable network (SEA-US) for faster Internet connection. In October last year, GTA confirmed it was for sale if the right buyer came along. GTA’s owner retained Citibank to explore certain strategic alternatives, including a possible sale.

It has one of the highest GDP per capita among Asian markets with well-educated workforce pool, and is a great adopter of new mobile and fixed technology.” And because of its geographically strategic location with most of submarine cables from Asia to US landing in Guam, in line with Telkom’s intentions to become a new global hub.”

Telkom and GTA have had a relationship for more than a year now, stemming from their partnership in the South East Asia United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system. The two are part of a consortium working to build capacity to meet the growing demand for bandwidth between Southeast Asia and North America.

“Our involvement in the SEA-US cable project gave us an opportunity to get to know GTA quite well,” said Mr. Basyir. “GTA is a strong and well-respected brand. It’s the largest, fastest growing telecommunications company in its home market. It has a commitment to providing an excellent customer experience. It’s a quality and technology leader in mobile, landline, and Internet business. It has a high-performing employee base. And we really appreciate its commitment to giving back to the community.” Furthermore, the synergy between Telkom and GTA will strengthen the positioning of Telkom Group in Asia Pacific as a hub of international traffic.

Robert Haulbrook, president and CEO of GTA, commented: “After 10 years of private-equity ownership, I believe this is a good time to transition the company to a successful international telecommunications firm such as Telkom. Since our privatization in 2005, employees have successfully transformed GTA into a rapidly growing company with a reputation for excellence in landline, mobile and Internet products. They brought new services for Guam customers, including the launch of 3G and 4G LTE networks, the Apple iPhone, digital TV services, and investments into its fiber optic network.”

Haulbrook added: “GTA has been able to retain the local management and local Guam culture even though we have been owned by offshore investors for ten years. We expect the transition to new ownership to be seamless for both employees and customers. I’m certain that GTA will greatly benefit from the wealth of knowledge, investment focus, technical proficiency and employee development for which Telkom is known.”

SEA-US Consortium Begin Construction of $250M SEA-US Cable System

Map

Indonesia, March 31, 2015 – A global consortium of telecommunications companies, formed to build and operate the South-East Asia – United States (SEA-US) submarine cable system, officially announced the start of construction for the landmark project, the first to directly connect Indonesia and the United States. NEC Corporation and NEC Corporation of America are the system suppliers for the US $250 million project that is expected to be completed in the fourth quarter of 2016.

The SEA-US system will link the five areas and territories of Manado in Indonesia, Davao in Southern Philippines; Piti in the territory of Guam; as well as Honolulu (on the island of Oahu), Hawaii; and Los Angeles, California in the continental U.S. The system will be approximately 15,000 kilometers in length, stretched along a unique route and has been designed and engineered to bypass earthquake prone areas in East Asia, thereby providing a strategic diversity in the range of connectivity to transpacific networks with ensured stable connectivity.

The cable system will provide an initial 20 terabit per second (Tb/s) capacity, with state-of-the-art 100 Gigabit per second (Gb/s) technology. This capacity will help to meet the exponentially growing demand for bandwidth between Southeast Asia and North America in unparalleled performance, especially for those two ASEAN countries. With further connectivity using existing and planned submarine cable systems in the region, other countries such as Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, Papua New Guinea, and Australia can enjoy the benefit of the SEA-US.

The SEA-US consortium consists of PT. Telekomunikasi Indonesia International (Telin), Globe Telecom, RAM Telecom International (RTI), Hawaiian Telcom, Teleguam Holdings (GTA), GTI Corporation (a member of the Globe Telecom group of companies) and Telkom USA.

Syarif Syarial Ahmad, President Director of Telin stated, “This cable construction is significant as it is one of the biggest milestones for Indonesia’s rapid growth in communications and it demonstrates Telin’s commitment to providing Indonesia consumers with state of the art global infrastructure development. Our objective is now closer with SEA-US given that it is the first cable system with direct connection from Indonesia to USA, where most of the Internet’s content is sourced.”

The frequent use of high bandwidth internet in Indonesia is ranging from business, where video conference is highly utilized in many offices, as well as entertainment, where video and TV streaming have become part of casual activities of Indonesians.

Gil Genio, Globe Telecom Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer pointed out that, “The SEA-US project will enable Globe to play a major role in providing superior connectivity for consumers and businesses in the Philippines to connect to the US. Our link-up with the SEA-US cable system will serve the exponential growth of mobile Internet use in our country, enabling the Filipino digital lifestyle and wonderful experience for our customers and businesses.”

He added that, “this development will also benefit the outsourcing and offshoring industry, including major contact centers, business process outsourcing providers, global financial institutions and a host of other multinationals that require very large bandwidth as the Philippines has become the preferred destination for these companies.”

Russ Matulich, Chief Executive Officer of RTI stated, “SEA-US will enable RTI to meet the diverse needs of telecommunications carriers, large multinational enterprises, content providers and government entities looking to connect over 1.5 billion business and consumers in the Southeast Asia region. RTI is proud to work with industry leading partners to build what will be the fastest cable connecting Southeast Asia with the United States. SEA-US’s essential Asia-US route diversity, lower latency and onward connectivity options via Hawaii and Guam will enable RTI to offer unmatched services to transpacific connectivity customers.”

Eric K. Yeaman, Hawaiian Telcom’s president and CEO, said that, “Today’s announcement signals the beginning of a truly vital project that will facilitate economic opportunity and growth for Hawaii’s residents and businesses. Hawaii is no different from the rest of the world in its need and desire for more bandwidth and the SEA-US system will ensure our trans-Pacific capacity needs are met both now and well into the future.”

Robert Haulbook, GTA president and chief executive officer, says “GTA is excited about this consortium. With this system, collectively, we are well positioned to meet the growing demand for increased bandwidth and strengthening our position to enhance overall network redundancy. Guam plays a vital role, and we look forward to SEA-US meeting capacity needs of all users in our areas.”

Naoki Yoshida, General Manager of NEC’s Submarine Network Division said that, “As one of the world’s top vendors of submarine cable systems, NEC is honored to begin construction on this new 100G trans-oceanic submarine cable system that will span nearly 15,000 kilometers. This cable promises to expand connectivity and capacity as well as contribute to the economies of Southeast Asia and the U.S. The construction of this advanced system enables NEC to capitalize on more than 40 years of experience, laying over 200,000 kilometers of submarine cable infrastructure and contributing to worldwide communications. Through this undertaking, NEC will continue to dedicate its strength to the development of telecommunication infrastructure in these regions and other countries across the globe.”
